On October 16, 2026, contractors completed the upper layer of asphalt concrete pavement on the reconstructed section of the A-17 Kyzylorda–Zhezkazgan highway, km 216–314, in the Ulytau Region. Asphalt paving works have now been completed across the entire approximately 98-kilometre section.

The reconstruction is being implemented under the CAREC Corridors 1, 2 and 6 Connector Road Reconstruction Project. The client is NC QazAvtoZhol JSC, with financing support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Construction was carried out across four lots, Lots 7 through 10, in accordance with Category II road standards.

The works began in April 2025 and were completed over two construction seasons.

Technical supervision under international FIDIC contractual conditions is being provided by the consortium of Renardet S.A. (Switzerland) and Engineering Services LLP (Kazakhstan).

Quality assurance has remained one of the key priorities throughout the project. The supervision team conducted incoming inspections of each batch of construction materials and verified every layer of the pavement structure before the subsequent layer was placed. Independent laboratory testing was also carried out, including direct sampling from completed pavement layers.

Particular attention was paid to the quality of asphalt concrete works. Dedicated specialists monitored compliance with project specifications and technical requirements despite the sharply continental climate and challenging ground conditions encountered in certain sections.

Completion of the asphalt concrete works marks an important milestone for the project. The upgraded road will provide a more reliable and safer transport connection between the Ulytau and Kyzylorda regions, while strengthening the highway’s role within the international CAREC transport corridors.

Final road furnishing works are currently underway, including the installation of road signs, pavement markings, and safety elements.

Following commissioning, the project will enter the Defect Liability Period, during which the technical supervision team will continue monitoring the condition of the road and compliance with contractual obligations.

For Engineering Services, participation in a major infrastructure project of this scale represents both a contribution to improving regional connectivity and a demonstration of our expertise in supervising large infrastructure projects under international standards.

A working meeting was held in Atyrau between Akim of the Atyrau Region Bolat Akchulakov and representatives of Engineering Services. The parties discussed the digitalization of construction control, improving project transparency, and the use of analytics and artificial intelligence throughout the construction lifecycle.

The key focus of the meeting was the transition from traditional construction supervision to a management system that allows clients to see the actual status of a project in near real time. This approach makes it possible to monitor schedules, quality, budgets, and key project risks within a single environment.

The Engineering Services team presented the Digital Engineering Services (DES) platform – a solution designed for integrated monitoring of construction projects, consolidation of project data, and providing management teams and clients with a clear picture of project performance.

Early identification of risks at the design stage

Special attention was paid to the quality of design and cost-estimate documentation.

Bolat Akchulakov emphasized the need to change the very approach to construction project control: it is important to monitor not only the final result, but the entire process – including timelines, quality, cost, and risks.

Particular attention should be given to identifying inconsistencies in design and cost-estimate documentation before construction begins. This helps prevent issues from being discovered only after construction works are already underway.

Analytics and AI as the next level of construction control

Engineering Services representatives also presented opportunities for the use of digital analytics and artificial intelligence tools.

The discussion included automated analysis of:

The objective of these technologies is not to replace engineers, but to help specialists and decision-makers identify inconsistencies earlier and make management decisions faster.

Potential integration of DES with the Situation and Analytics Center

Another area of discussion was the possible integration of the Digital Engineering Services platform into the Situation and Analytics Center currently under development in the Atyrau Region.

Such integration could consolidate information on construction projects within a single system and enable online monitoring of project progress, timelines, and key performance indicators.

Next step – a pilot project

Following the meeting, Engineering Services was tasked with preparing an extended demonstration of the DES platform as well as proposals for launching a pilot project in the Atyrau Region.

For Engineering Services, initiatives of this kind provide an opportunity to apply its accumulated engineering and digital expertise to improve the transparency of construction projects and move from simply recording problems to systematic management of schedules, quality, budgets, and risks.

Engineering Services will continue developing digital tools that help clients make data-driven decisions and improve the manageability of construction projects across all stages – from design to commissioning.

At Engineering Services, we believe that the most effective changes often begin not with a major transformation project, but with one simple question:

“How can we do this better?”

And the most valuable answers often come from the people who work with these processes every day — those who see unnecessary steps, repetitive tasks, wasted time, and opportunities to improve the way we work.

Five LEAN initiatives proposed and implemented by our colleagues have now been recognized with financial awards:

What connects all five initiatives is one simple principle: instead of accepting an inefficient process as “the way things have always been done,” look for a better way to do it.

That is what LEAN means to us.

LEAN is not just about reducing costs. It is about creating a culture where every employee can identify an opportunity for improvement, propose a solution, turn that idea into a practical tool, and be recognized for the value it creates.

These five examples are not the finish line. They are an invitation for more ideas.

Do you see a process that could be simplified?
Can a repetitive task be automated?
Is there a way to reduce time or unnecessary costs?
Can an existing tool be made faster, more accurate, or more convenient?

Share your idea.

A small improvement may seem insignificant at first. But when the same process is repeated hundreds or thousands of times, even a small change can create a significant impact for the entire company.

Engineering Services supports employee initiative and rewards ideas that turn into real improvements and measurable results.

Congratulations to our colleagues on their well-deserved awards!

And we look forward to the next LEAN ideas.

The next initiative we recognize could be yours.
